just what are beliefs?
Freeman Merriam-Webster, dictionary defines a belief as: a state of habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing. Something believed (accepted as true) such as a religious tenet (principle or doctrine) or a conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon especially when based on examination of evidence.
Beliefs are the root of our being, the programs for our brain, the roots of all we do and say. They are at the heart of our successes and failures in life, and our convictions that are embedded in our hearts and minds. They help us to anchor our understandings of life and can be empowering or disabling. Beliefs come from our acceptance of what others tell us or from our own lifetime experiences.

For example: Say you have a fear of heights. Through the course of a conversation with a practitioner, the basis for that fear is uncovered from the conscious or subconscious mind. The core belief causing the fear of heights is then analyzed and removed from the subconscious/conscious mind with the permission of the client. Wella, fear gone. (My choice of fear of heights was random and could have been any fear or phobia known to human kind.)
Another example: If you feel unworthy or worthless (a belief) your aura will project that feeling which others will notice and you could be treated accordingly. The idea is to shift that subconscious belief to - I am worthy, I have value and am respected and others will unconsciously look at you differently.
One more example: You are consumed with grief because of the loss of a loved one. Life seems to be falling apart and you find it difficult to think about anything else. Your heart is broken.
